The Christchurch Pops Choir
The Christchurch Pops choir was formed in 2011 as a response by local performers after the devastating earthquakes that ravaged the city. With all theatres and concert halls closedthis group of 35 singers started to sing music that lifted their spirits for the simply for the sake of singing together. They focused on music that was popularfamiliar and drawn from non-classical source. Gershwin to Gaga quickly became a moniker for the group. Fast forward five years and the choirmuch like the cityhas grown and changed in ways previously unimagined. The choir now has 80+ members and features annual concerts in city centres throughout the South Island. Their new artistic directorRavil Atlashas brought his American expertise in singing and performance in order to create a major performing group for the area.The Pops Choir has been seen on nationally televised events as well as major civic events in Christchurch. They can be seen in concert up to five times a year and have begun to develop higher production values including a bandsoundand lights in each of their performances. Backed by their principal corporate sponsorthe Christchurch International Airportthey continue to growdevelopand become more professional each year. Future plans include increased concert toursrecordingsand a Pops Choir vocal series of arrangements of songs by New Zealand artists.

American born singing teacherconductorand directorRavil Atlasreceived his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts degrees from San Jose State University. He studied Choral conducting under luminaries Dr. Charleen ArchibequePaul SalumonovichWilliam Halland Dr. Peter Jermihov and orchestral conducting with Dr. Dennis De Couteau. He received his acting training at the American Conservatory Theater.

Ravil has more than 30 years of professional experience as a performer starting with the acclaimed Grammy Award winning vocal ensemble Chanticleer. He then moved onto Broadway and operaperforming the leading tenor roles in more than 70 professional productions worldwide and accumulating more than six years in long-running Broadway musicals Les Miserablesand The Phantom of the Opera as well as many regional productions.

In New ZealandRavil has become a new voice on singing and performance techniques. He has conducted the National Youth Choirand is the current Artistic Director of the Christchurch Pops ChoirThe Voices Festival for contemporary choirsand his professional choir the Atlas Voices Ensemble. He is actively involved in vocal coaching of professional soloists as well as vocal groups including the 2016 National Barbershop Champions in the women’s chorus and men’s quartet categories as well as the Youth Men’s chorus and quartet champions. Ravil was recently a featured mentor with the Naked Choir televised choir competition series fro pop A Capella groups.

Ravil is currently working towards a PhD in education at The University of Otago developing new singing instruction methods and trains both singers and singing teachers.
